About the Event
“One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation." ~ A Queen should always be prepared!
The topic of puberty can be very challenging: What do I say? When is a good time to have the talk? Am I ready to have this conversation? How much information do I share? Will my daughter be prepared? Parents/Guardians with young girls have asked one or all of these questions, plus many more.
To answer the call of our mission, A Sista’s Touch will be hosting the 6th Edification workshop of our inaugural program: A Sista’s Always Prepared: Puberty to Queen. As our young Black girls transition through puberty, we want to ensure they have the tools, support, and resources to flourish on their path toward Queendom through the cultivation of confidence and preparation.
A Sista's Touch is excited to have Dr. Javay Ross as the host MD Expert for Cohort 6. Dr. Ross is a UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland (BCH-Oakland) pediatrician. She works at the BCH-Oakland Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Primary Care and Adolescent Health. She works as the Medical Director of the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center. She completed her pediatric and chief residency at Children’s Hospital Oakland (CHO), where she is currently one of the Associate Program Directors in Medical Education. Prior to joining the CHO family in 2009, Dr. Ross completed her undergraduate studies at Xavier University of Louisiana and developed a passion for underserved medicine at the Drew/UCLA Medical Education Program for medical school. As a 2nd generation Oakland native, she tries her best to stay connected to the community through her work both professionally and outside of pediatrics. She is currently wrapping up her last appointment after seven years on the City of Oakland’s Head Start Advisory Board, is on Oakland Children’s Fairyland Board of Directors and many UCSF institutional committees, and is an active participant in her church community—one that scaffolds her commitment to social justice and health equity. Dr. Ross spends her free time immersed in family, pillared by her supportive husband and their parents, learning and growing daily as the mother of their two young sons and perfecting her skills in the kitchen.
